How to Spend Ramadhaan

Muslims should plan their schedules for this month, before-hand, so as to spare maximum time for ‘ibadah. Here is a brief list of the acts which should be carried out in Ramadhaan with due care:

  1. To perform every Salaah with Jama’ah in a Musjid (For males). Females should perform their salaah at home.

  2. To wake up a little earlier than the exact time of Sehri and to perform the Salaah of Tahajjud. There is no prescribed number of the Tahajjud prayer. It is better to perform 8 Rak’aats.

  3. Perform all nafl prayers of Ishraaq (two rak’at after sunrise) Duha (four rakaat which may be performed at anytime after Ishraaq before noon) and Awwaabin (six rak’aat after Maghrib).

  4. Recite as much Qur’aan as possible. No specific limit is prescribed. But one should recite as much as he can. Many of our senior Ulama would spend almost all their time in the recitation of the Qur’aan.

  5. Dhikr or Tasbeeh, especially the following azkaar:

    • Durood Shareef
    • The Third Kalimah
    • Istighfaar
    • The First Kalimah

Apart from reciting these azkaar, one hundred times each at a particular time, one should continue reciting them frequently throughout the day, even if one is engaged in some light work, when walking and when in bed.

  6. Dua: One can make dua for everything he needs both in this world and in the Hereafter. However, the duas of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) are so comprehensive that they encompass all that a Muslim needs in this life and after his death. It is, therefore, much advisable to make dua to Allah Ta’ala in the words used by Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). There are several books where these duas have been compiled. Here is the name of two books which should be kept by every Muslim in his home and be used for daily duas:

    • Munaajat-e-Maqbool by Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (RA)
    • Al Hizbul A’zam by Mullah Ali Qaari (RA)
  7. Sadaqah (charity): Apart from paying Zakaat, which is fardh (obligatory), one should also pay optional sadaqah in Ramadhaan according to his ability. It is reported in the Hadith that Rasulullah b used to pay special attention in Ramadhaan to look after the poor and to help them financially. Therefore, a Muslim should give as much in sadaqah as he can afford.
